child development theorists need help for my Presentation please?

Hi i have to do a fifteen minute presentation about a child development theorist, their background, what they believed, and how their theories are used today. Everyone else is doing the obvious theorists such as Freud, Piaget, Erricson, Bowlby, Winnicot, Axline, Rogers, Vygorsky. I wanted to do something interesting, maybe focus on how children play and the importance of play in childrens emotional and physical development… maybe get the audience involved in something. Ideas please anyone!!

What about Maria Montessori? Her philosophy was based on the idea that the child is a dynamic, curious person that has an inner need to know the the world. She believed that learning materials should be toy or game-like so that the child learns out of play and personal interest.

    What about the Pymallion Effect?

From Wikapedia:- The Pygmalion effect, Rosenthal effect, or more commonly known as the "teacher-expectancy effect" refers to situations in which students perform better than other students simply because they are expected to do so. The Pygmalion effect requires a student to internalise the expectations of their superiors. It is a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy, and in this respect, students with poor expectations internalise their negative label, and those with positive labels succeed accordingly. Within sociology, the effect is often cited with regards to education and social class.

Maybe give them chinese whispers and predict they will get it wrong?
There should be heaps of practical things that would fit into this but my brain isn’t working real well at the moment!

    Good luck with it!~

Check out Tina Bruce she has done extensive works in this. Do not leave out Vygotsky though the Zone of proximal development and scaffolding is an essentail piece of knowledge to apply to support children’s learning through play. Good luck with it.
Just a thought also, you may care to mention that Piaget has recently been heavily criticised for basing his theories on experiments he did with only his own children!!

I go with zenana I was going to say Montessori she is very interesting if you really get down into what she believes and who she studied. Me I love Ericson the most but you said you dont want to do him.

these are main ones I can think of! Hope it helps…the PLA have a book which is all about different theories which me be worth finding out!

    Activitiy ideas:
Get one person to perform an easy act such as build tower of 3 blocks, and another person to build you a recreation of the apollo space station…or something you know they will fail at. Then after task ask them how it made them feel? Person who achieved should feel happy and would happily repeat…they feel good! Person who failed feels upset ,embarrassed and doesnt want to try again…the link is that if a goal is achieveable in physical play then children will have better self-esteem and more likely to practise new skill.
